While you are not going to construct a full size goal in your back yard,
there is actually an advantage to getting smaller training goal nets. What does a smaller target
demand? Better accuracy.
These types of training goals come as portable pop-up
models, or in the more permanent plastic structures which are easily
assembled and disassembled when needed. Some even come with a bounce-back goal face so
that the ball will return to the player.
Training to get better touch and control on the ball is an
essential part of getting ready for a match. One great way to hone skills in this area is to let
your child loose with a training ball on an elastic string.
What this does, is allow the user to try juggling the
ball without it running away from them, as well as getting used to passing skills, as the
ball will come back to their foot, allowing them to learn how to trap the ball and develop those
all important one touch soccer skills.
Another great piece of training equipment to help with close control are
dribbling cones, which can be spaced out to suit the level of difficulty the child wants to
attempt. Then put a ball at the child’s feet and watch them slalom their way around the cones to
improve dribbling skills.
So while every soccer player dreams of beating three defenders and curling
a long range shot past the opposing goal keeper in the dying minutes of a World Cup final, there is
even more to the game than ball work.
All of the ball skills listed can be enhanced with the right training equipment, and they are all
equally essential to becoming a successful soccer play. But one big aspect which often gets
overlooked in the development of a child in a soccer environment, is fitness, speed and
stamina. These are just as vital as ball control.
You can put training hurdles in front of your child
to run over, training sticks to line up for the child to weave in and out of,
all to help fine tune that mobility and turn of speed. Speed rings on the
ground will help co-ordinate pace and power, and perhaps one of the biggest pieces of training
equipment of all that shouldn’t be forgotten, the training bag to carry it
all in!
